Taking the Fear out of Quilting As You Go (QAYG)

Well if you've seen or been around our blog you know I'm the risk taker.  The jump in.  The let's think later one.  Heck i'm still under a year of sewing for the FIRST. TIME. EVER! That is not a joke - started July 2018.

You can read here all about how this quilt came to be, and yep improv piecing was new to us as well and here we are rocking it :)

Why not Quilt As You Go (QAYG) as well? It's not like we don't have enough going on in the quilt already? hehe  We decided to go this route because I wanted lots of detail (read sparkle thread, metallic thread, glow thread

So the main quilt was made up of 5 panels - you can see them on our design wall.  I had details that I wanted but didn't need to have the quilt pieced to do that.

We backed the panels - did embroidery, metallic thread, sparkle thread, glow thread and then I quilted each of the panels.

I just did a looping star and heart free motion pattern.  The panels made it easy since they were smaller to QAYG.

You can see the back and what the design looked like.  It was just black thread since I didn't want anything much with detail for the background.

We sewed the panels together added extra for sides and bottom to make queen size and attached the backing.  I did quilt the sides and bottom more to "tack it down" and yes I realize it breaks the rules of quilting density, but...........how many of the quilting rules have I followed so far??

Please comment and tell me I'm not the only one who does not go by the book all the time!

Here is another up close shot of the quilt itself - I am so excited to reveal it in all its glory coming up so soon!  The messages and story behind this quilt are so awesome!

Here's some of the other special touches in the Limitless Quilt!

  1. It looks great so far. I've not had the best of luck with quilt as you go, perhaps if I'd tried it more than once.

  4. I've never tried QAYG and probably never will, now that I've invested in a longarm machine, but it's an interesting method. And I love all of the wonderful sentiments stitched into your quilt!
