Llamas are so in right now and not just for babies!!!
My future daughter-in-law actually has 2 llamas. A boy and a girl (1 brown and 1 brown and white). I couldn't find a pattern that I liked, so I improvised and come up with my own pattern.
Like me and my daughter, she loves sparkles and soft and cuddly. Therefore, I made the llamas out of minky and then it's all about the embellishments!!! I added buttons for the eyes and nose and eyelashes and then added a bow/tie to the neckline and a quilted blanket for their backs. Note, the boy llama has deer ribbon on the blanket and cuffs because my son is a hunter!!!
doesn't he look so real?! I love the detail of eyes, fur, and nose! |
I also used a flannel backing on the front. For the back, I couldn't find fabric that I liked so I took a picture of the front, added some hearts and sent it to spoonflower to have a one of a kind backing made to match the top. And did I say that I had the back done in minky!!! The blanket is so soft and cuddly and she absolutely loved it!!!

Those llamas!!! How cool is that! What a unique and different quilt!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comment. Sewing is such a passion of mine and I just started to get into quilting or at least the quilting part. I've sewn tops forever, but have just recently started to quilt my own tops on my domestic machine!!!
DeleteWho wouldn't love a quilt with minky llamas?!? What a cute design, and I think it's very cool that you had the backing fabric made from the design. Definitely a quilt to be used and loved!
ReplyDeleteExactly my thought. A quilt with minky is my kind of quilt!!! Everyone talks about how hard minky is to work with and quilt, but I've been sewing for quite some time and I love minky and just started quilting so I chose to add it to my quilt and couldn't be happier!!!
DeleteCute. Nice quilting too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quilting compliment. This was actually just the 2nd quilt I've quilted. I know it's just straight lines with a walking foot, but I thought I did pretty good for my 2nd quilt and 1st time sewing with minky!!!
DeleteSo cute
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment!!! It's always nice to hear that someone appreciates my sewing and quilting!!!
DeleteYou did a fabulous job! Love those llamas!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice review!!! Llamas are not really my thing, but they are very popular right now and who couldn't resist a cute cuddly sewn llama quilt!!!
DeleteHi Karen! OMG - this is so darn adorable. And your clever title - that just drew me in to begin with. The 3D Llamas - so fabulous. My two great-grands would just love the texture on this, and then you added MINKY too. Over the top in the best way. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteThanks you so much for the wonderful comment!!! You are too kind!!! :) I just love sewing and quilting and sewing cuddly quilts for family and friends. I also like to embellish a bit as if you couldn't tell!!! I really toyed with all the embellishments because the quilt is probably not washable now (just spot clean), but I just couldn't resist!!!
DeleteMy cousin's adult daughter would love that quilt! ❤ Great job at improvising and coming up with a great quilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I really enjoyed sewing this quilt and then quilting it. It really was pretty easy. It was like 1 giant applique with lots of embellishments!!! That's the kind of sewing/quilting I like best!!! It's all about the sparkle!!!
DeleteHi Karen, what a beautiful quilt. Your daughter will surely love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comment on my quilt. It was a really fun sew!!!
DeleteThis is just too cute! Awesome that you were able to get your llamas printed at Spoonflower - it makes for the perfect backing.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your nice comment. I just love Spoonflower when I can't find the fabric I'm needing or wanting to sew or quilt special projects.
DeleteFuzzy llamas! I love these. The quilting on it is terrific, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I just love to sew fuzzy and cuddly quilts and for you to say the quilting was terrific tops off my day!!! This is just the 2nd to that I've quilted and definitely will be doing more!!!
DeleteOoh -- SQUEALING over here! Your llamas are awesome! How did you stitch down the Minky appliques? I love how the fabric pile totally hides the stitching, but that's why I can't tell how it was done, either. And you had Spoonflower print the backing on MINKY?! The print looks amazing!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your nice comment. I used wonder under to iron the minky to the flannel top and then I just did a satin stitch to applique the llamas. I just love the way it turned out all fluffy and the way it hid the stitch - looks more real that way to me!!! And regarding the minky backing from spoonflower, well let me just say I love minky because it's so soft, but had to order 2 samples before getting it just right. The 1st sample was a little dark and I wanted the gray to match the gray flannel on the top. I finally took a pic of the top in outdoor sunlight and that did the trick!!! Spoonflower and minky in general is pricey, but sooo worth it in this case!!!
DeleteI'm so impressed with your creative skills! Love the Spoonflower fabric as well as the front.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! I love to sew 1 of a kind quilts for the special people in my life!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe this is my first visit to your site and boy, I chose the right post to come on over and read! Your title is what drew me in because I have read the Llama Llama books to my grand daughter about 100 times. I don't know where to start - ok, here goes: the thought that you put into this is incredible - so many details from the little furry llamas which make them so much more realistic to the little saddle blankets and bling you added. Having the backing printed at Spoonflower was genius and I know it was spendy. But the overall effect is worth it. Printing on minky is new to me but wow! Over the top soft and cozy. This quilt is really unique - I can't imagine there is another one like it out there! I hope your daughter just loves it, how could she not? Her mama llama thought of all of it.
ReplyDeleteWow, you just made my day!!! I love sewing and quilting and what makes it even more enjoyable is when someone gives me such a nice compliment. You are too kind. We are the sparkly girls but love soft and cuddly quilts as well!!!
DeleteThose llamas are so adorable. Well done. Thanks for linking up with Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words!!! Sewing and quilting pretty sparkly things makes me sooo happy!!!
