For me, it's all about the embellishments/personalization!!!
I gifted this scrappy quilt to my son and future daughter-in-law as a house warming gift and just couldn't stop there without sewing these scrappy shams as well!!!
They make for a quick and easy sew and can be gifted for lots of different occasions.
I'm not going to go into a lot of sewing and quilting details because you can find lots of free patterns on the internet that you can use to sew/quilt shams, but I did want to talk about a few sewing and quilting points!
Since I'm a quilter now, I decided to quilt the front of the shams to practice my ruler quilting. My daughter (Amber) loves to free motion quilt (FMQ) and she's great at it, but for me, I like to use rulers!!! As she has stated before, I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I love my heart ruler where all my hearts turn out perfect!!! I can overlap/angle them all different directions so I guess I'm not a true over the top perfectionist!
I went to a class using the Westalee Rulers and absolutely love them. I have all sorts of them (circles, feathers, hearts, beginner pack, etc.) and use them all the time. You have to have a special sewing foot either high or low shank. For me, its in-the-ditch or ruler quilting and maybe a little stippling from time to time!!!
I also like to applique and thought how fun would it be to applique the Mr. and Mrs. using my sewn together scraps. It was a little bit of a challenge with all the different seams!!! To help, I used
Wonder Under which worked great to secure the applique to the sham so I could sew the satin stitch around them. I have a fancy embroidery machine, but haven't taken an applique class on how to auto machine applique so I do it the old fashioned way and cut my pieces out, use
Wonder Under to secure them and then satin stitch or blanket stitch around the piece to finish it. It works for me and I've always been told if something isn't broken - no need to fix it!!!

What a cute addition!!! Love the idea. So simple and perfect. Also since the wedding quilt is a crazy, scrappy, gorgeous riot of colors, the relatively plain shams give a place for the eyes to rest.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment. I myself like a little white, off white or black for the eye to rest, but the future daughter - in - law wanted a totally scrappy quilt. I agree with you that the sewn pillow shams give the eye a place to rest!!!
DeleteHi Karen! Oh, these pillows look SO darn cute on the scrappy bed quilt. Just perfect. And your quilting is perfect as well. I love Westalee rulers but rarely use them for some unknown reason. I guess I have to take the time to watch a video or two to remember HOW to use them. I have been focusing on my FMQ instead and freehanding hearts - although I am definitely a perfectionist and can understand why you want them looking perfect! Great job. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! My next quilt is going to need to be FMQ with a mountain design so wish me luck!!! I might need lots of practice prior to quilting on the original piece!!! lol
DeleteLove that scrappy quilt and the pillow shams are a perfect addition. Thanks for sharing with Moving it Forward
ReplyDeleteThanks. The shams were a joy to sew. I kind of like applique and I thought it might be a little hard with the seams, but really wasn't!!! I love the personal touch it gives!
DeleteHi Karen, that's a really great idea. If you feel like it, please consider linking up to Free Motion Mavericks. Those are really great pillow shams and quilting with the rulers is a lot of fun. https://quiltinglearningcombo.blogspot.com/p/free-motion-mavericks.html
ReplyDeleteI'm not much on the techie side, but will talk to my daughter about linking up!!!
