Llama Drama at the "Last Quilter Standing" challenge

I recently went to a "Last Quilters Standing" challenge at Rooster Creek Quilt Shop for their 5th Anniversary.  I lasted 43 hours without sleep, but the winner of the $2000 plus prizes which included a Bernina machine lasted 59 hours!  Even though I didn't win, I made some great friends, picked up some sewing tips and got a lot of projects completed!!!
The 1st project I worked on was the binding to my daughter's "Limitless" quilt she designed.  All the little 2 1/2 inch colorful squares just added the perfect touch to her beautiful innovative quilt!!!  The quilt is 98 x 98 inches so that's a lot of squares.  It tremendously helps to roll the binding for assembly.

The next project I worked on was my "Llama Love You" quilt. And yes, by this time into the competition there was a little bit of "Llama Drama" going on!  All of us quilters wanted to win the $2000+ prizes so bad!!!
I just love to add embellishments and glitter to my quilts to give them texture.  I didn't get around to quilting the top until later, but quilted the top using my domestic machine.
The "Llama Love You" pattern includes both the top and the quilting design.

The last project I worked on was my "FredBird" baby quilt.  My son was a pitcher in High School and College and we're from Missouri, so I had to capture FredBird pitching!!!  I used fabric paints to make the top and my domestic machine to quilt it!!!  Sorry, you can't really see the quilting in the picture.  I think next time I will applique FredBird!!!  I used to applique my FredBird quilts, but my machine broke so I started painting them.  I while back I purchased a new (used) machine that I love so my next one will be appliqued!!!

  1. Wow! Karen, these are some fantastic finishes! I do really like scrappy bindings, and you're right about that one being perfect for her starry quilt. And the Llamas! What a fun quilt to make, with the fur fabric, even. :)

    1. Thanks for the compliment. I had a blast, but was exhausted, but a good way to get some UFO's completed.

  2. Wow, what a competition! I would've been ready for the funny farm after not sleeping for 59, or even 42 hours! Great way to get some projects done. Love your daughter's quilt!!! And we all love llamas these days! Was there a lot of coffee involved in this event??!

    1. I loved the event and met lots of new friends and will probably end up joining the Guild. I don't currently belong to a guild and yes lots of coffee and caffeinated drinks.

  3. Hi Karen! Wow, I can't imagine sewing for 59 hours straight. I'd say she deserved that money and sewing machine. You sure made a valiant effort - good job. And what great finishes you have to share from it. I just love the llama quilt! I sure would love to feel them and wonder what fabric you chose for the llamas themselves? ~smile~ Roseanne

  4. Thanks for the sweet compliment. The fabric I used for the llamas was faux fur and I purchased it an Joann's. It's soooo soft and easier to sew than minky!!!!

  5. Wow! That's quite the challenge - it'd be a tough one for me. Even though you didn't win, congrats on staying awake that long and getting some quilting done.
